Maharashtra

The most significant state in India for wine production with regard to quantity and brand recognition, Maharashtra accounts for two-thirds of the national production and is home to most of the best-known Indian wineries. Mumbai, the state capital previously known as Bombay, is also India’s commercial capital and provides easy access to the two major winegrowing regions of Nashik and Pune. The substantial western coastline on the Arabian Sea and the north-south range of hills known as the Western Ghats (or the Sahyadri in this state) play a major role in shaping the climatic conditions of this hot tropical area, and thus impact viticultural practices and wine styles.
