NOTED SUB-REGIONS & VILLAGES
- Burkegaon: located just 30 kilometres east of Pune, it has brown alluvial soils
- Roti: east of Pune on Highway 9, along the slightly higher slopes banking the river Bhima
- Baramati: a major centre for grape growing, it owes its name to the soil samples taken in 1939 by the British from twelve different locations in the area, known then as Bhimthadi, to establish the feasibility of grape cultivation here (bara and mati mean ‘twelve’ and ‘soil’, respectively)
- Akluj: officially within the administrative district of Solapur, from a wine perspective it is best listed under Pune, its rugged, sloping terrain and infertile soils well suited to high-quality grape production
Pune,
a metropolitan city and cultural capital of Maharashtra, is located in the
south of the state. Its population of 4.5 million is extended by a large
expatriate community drawn to the extensive automotive industry, which includes
Tata Motors, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar Land Rover to mention just
some of the major names. Though no wine is produced in the city, a number of
wineries are within close proximity along the Pune–Solapur highway.
Geography and climate are fairly homogenous in the wine-producing areas, which are located in the plains carved out of the Deccan plateau by the rivers Bhima and Nira. The altitude varies between 500 and 600 metres, depending on the distance from the rivers. The soils, too, vary from the rich and fertile brown soils of the lower lying alluvial areas, dotted with limestone granules at places, to the more rugged and less fertile soils of brown and red gravel or, at times, black basalt.

Like Nashik, Pune enjoys warm temperatures and perhaps a somewhat smaller diurnal range during winter due to the altitude, and so the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, for example, tend to be riper, lusher, denser and bigger. Sub-regional climatic differences influence the choice of variety, as in the village of Roti, located in the vicinity of Baramati, which is more suited, with its higher diurnal temperature range, to the crisp white, such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. The annual precipitation is low and concentrated in the monsoon season, and the area is prone to hailstorms.
