BIJAPUR & NORTHERN KARNATAKA
Inevitably, climatic differences exert a major influence on the style and quality of the wines, though the diversity in soil type is also interesting to spot. The divide between the hot tropical belt in the north and the mild tropical nature of both mid and southern Karnataka is fairly obvious. Location also impacts the marketing reach of the wineries. Although several units in Bijapur and the northern region produce and supply wines to larger wineries or brand owners, such as Sula, Fratelli Wines, Myra Vineyards and Mandala Valley Wines, only one winery, the Elite Vintage Winery, markets wines under its own label. Distance does not make impossible the crafting and marketing of excellent wines, as KRSMA Estates exemplifies, but it does require skill, expertise and financial resources.
With an average altitude of 600 metres, the region lies on the Deccan plateau, close to the Maharashtra border, and offers rolling uplands with shallow brown soils sitting on mineral-rich reddish bedrock. There is hardly any vegetation

The rich and fertile black soils of the Krishna valley, south of Bijapur town, however, attract much agricultural activity. It is interesting to note that the diversity of terroir can be striking within just a small area, as evinced in the images from two different vineyards of the Elite Vintage Winery. The plots of red schist are only five kilometres from limestone-rich brown soil. Cabernet enjoys the red schist, while Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Shiraz thrive in the limestone-rich vineyards.
