There is always something new to discover. On location with my photographer just outside Bangalore in March 2015, while working on this book, I bumped into a small group of Indians from whom I learnt that Soumika Chakraborty was touring vineyards with a very clear mission. She was to create Valle de Indies, a new brand to be launched by the Fidelis group in the autumn of 2015.
The grapes are custom crushed at Nectar Vineyards near Bijapur in northern Karnataka and winemaking is led by Pragyesh Kumar, a graduate in oenology from the University of Adelaide, South Australia.
Fidelis Beverages Ltd has some wine boutiques in their portfolio of retail outlets and wishes to complement its offerings in the Karnataka market with affordable and approachable wines. With retail prices ranging from Rs 99 to Rs 595, Valle de Indies aims to be the wine of the masses.
As I write, hope remains that the samples will arrive in London before this book goes to press.
