The
company was established by Dr Antonio Sequeira for the production of feni, a
Goan alcoholic drink made from coconut or cashew. The family started to produce
wine in 1985 and currently have two manufacturing facilities in Goa, using
grapes grown in Baramati, Nashik, Indapur and Sangli in the state of
Maharashtra.
The
wines produced under the brand name of Susegad are avoided by most tourists in
Goa. Tonia also produces a number of Indian ports. It apparently has an import
portfolio but, despite repeated requests, I was given no opportunity to visit
even though I winter in Goa every year.
